Designing Homes for Every Generation

Happy New Year! We wish all of our friends a very healthy and happy New Year, and thank you sincerely for your continued support of our small, local family business.

As we reflect on our most recent projects, one clear trend continues to stand out. As housing costs rise and available inventory remains limited, more families are choosing to adapt the homes they already love rather than relocate. This shift has led to a renewed focus on multi-generational living and flexible home design.

The Return of the Generational Family Home

Many of our clients have deep roots in their neighborhoods and want to remain close to their community, schools, and support systems. To make that possible, they are investing in renovations that allow their homes to grow with their families. Accommodating aging parents, welcoming adult children back home, or preparing for extended guest stays has become a priority for homeowners seeking long-term solutions.

What Is an ADU?

In the remodeling industry, you may hear the term ADU, or Accessory Dwelling Unit. An ADU is an independent living space located on the same property as the primary home. While zoning regulations vary by municipality, these spaces are becoming increasingly popular as families look for practical ways to support aging in place and extended family living.

Flexible Spaces for Changing Needs

Beyond family use, ADUs and similar renovations can provide housing for caregivers, elder care professionals, or childcare providers. As family needs change over time, these spaces adapt easily and serve as guest suites, private apartments, home offices, or future downsizing options.

Over the past two years, Creative Contracting has completed a variety of renovations that reflect this growing need for flexibility. These include first-floor additions designed for seniors, basement renovations with additional bedrooms and full baths, second-floor guest suites, and fully detached living spaces.

Real Projects, Real Solutions

One standout example is our From Garage to Great Room project in North Wales. In this transforming renovation, an underutilized three-car garage was completely reimagined into a spacious and accessible living suite.

What was once storage space became a first-floor bedroom/living area, complete with a full bathroom and generous closet space.

A dedicated prayer and meditation room was designed to reflect the homeowners’ personal lifestyle and spiritual needs.

Lansdale Aging-in-place Addition

Another meaningful renovation we completed is The Full Reveal: An Aging in Place Addition in Montgomery County.

As this Lansdale couple entered their golden years, navigating the large layout of their two-story colonial no longer aligned with how they wanted to live. The physical challenges of climbing stairs prompted them to explore alternatives, including luxury senior living communities and ranch homes in the area.

As they weighed their options, they quickly realized the limitations of the current housing market. Rather than leave the home and neighborhood they loved, they made the thoughtful decision to enhance their existing space. Their goal was to find a solution that would support both their immediate needs and their long-term plans.

Lansdale Primary suite

This first-floor primary suite addition was seamlessly added to the existing home and provided handicap accessibility.

A modern bathroom shower area with gray tiled walls and floor. The shower has a rainfall and handheld shower head, safety grab bars on the walls, and a small built-in shelf niche holding shampoo and soap. The area appears spacious and clean.

The shower in the primary bathroom is equipped with ADA handrails and a built-in shower seat to provide comfort for the couple to age in place gracefully.

Lansdale custom closet

Since the bedroom was very spacious, a large closet was added so that the couple could live totally independently of their second floor bedrooms and continue to thrive in their traditional colonial home.

A light gray two-story duplex with attached garage and black shutters. The driveway is paved with a small walkway leading to the front door. The yard has well-maintained grass and a few small bushes, with a large tree nearby. The sky is partly cloudy.

The addition of a first-floor primary bedroom suite became the cornerstone of their renovation. Designed with accessibility, comfort, and privacy in mind, the new living space allows them to age in place confidently while maintaining the character and flow of their home. The addition blends seamlessly with the existing structure, providing a practical yet elegant solution that supports independence without sacrificing style.

Exterior of cottage with grey shutters

Once a pool house and later a home office, this quaint cottage was converted into a private guest suite for visiting relatives and friends. This detached cottage ADU offers a fully independent living solution while maintaining architectural harmony with the main residence.

Equipped with a coffee bar and undercounter washer and dryer, this is the perfect place for the family to host their overnight guests.

Blue and white bathroom in a detached ADU

A beautiful white and blue color palette in the bathroom welcomes guests to a nice sized bathroom and threshold free shower.

Bedroom of a detached ADU

An added benefit for this type of ADU is a first-floor suite option in the detached ADU, which is especially advantageous given that the main house is a two-story colonial.

A Thoughtful Response to Today’s Housing Challenges

These projects are some of the most rewarding we undertake. They address real housing challenges while allowing families to remain in the homes and communities they love. ADUs and multi-generational renovations are not just trends—they are thoughtful, caring solutions designed for how families live today.
