Converting unused or underutilized spaces can be one of the most rewarding ways to update a home—especially when the transformation supports comfort, functionality, and aging in place. In this project, a three-car garage was reimagined and converted into a spacious, accessible suite, complete with a first-floor bedroom/living area, full bathroom, closets, and a dedicated prayer and meditation room. The result is a beautiful new space that blends seamlessly with the original architecture while providing long-term accessibility and flexibility for the homeowners.
A Comfortable Suite Converted From a Garage
The original three-car garage was thoughtfully redesigned to meet the homeowners’ vision of creating an accessible living space on the main level. To maintain parking and storage, a new two-car garage was built onto the home, blending harmoniously with the existing exterior.
Wide doorways and smooth transitions throughout the new suite allow for full wheelchair accessibility.
Seamless Design and Architectural Details
One of the standout details of this project was the thoughtful way the new living space was integrated with the existing home. Where the dining room once opened into the old garage, beautiful French doors with dentil trim were installed. The trim detail matched the style used throughout the first floor, making the addition look like it had always belonged.
The former garage was transformed into a spacious sitting area, elegantly furnished to reflect the homeowners’ style. A custom dark wood cabinet doubles as a Murphy bed, instantly converting the space into a full bedroom suite when needed. Mini-split systems were added to provide efficient heating and cooling, ensuring the new suite stays comfortable year-round.
A Dedicated Prayer and Meditation Room
A truly personal touch in this project was the addition of a prayer and meditation room. Designed as a serene retreat, the room features an altar with custom lighting and wall niches with tall windows that allow natural light to flow in, creating a peaceful, uplifting atmosphere. This quiet space provides the homeowners with a dedicated area for reflection, meditation, and spiritual practice—making the new suite both functional and deeply meaningful.
A Spa-Like Accessible Bathroom
To complete the new suite, a custom bathroom was added, balancing accessibility with elegant design. A pocket door leads into the bathroom, saving space in the hallway and offering a streamlined look.
The bathroom features a white vanity with double circular glass vessel sinks, paired with gold lighting, faucets, and fixtures that add a sense of luxury.
The accessible shower includes thoughtful safety features such as a bench, grab bars, and a handheld shower head, while the thermostatic system offers a rain shower head, body jets, and multiple spray options for comfort. Gold-trimmed glass doors and sleek finishes elevate the room into a spa-like retreat.
Opposite the bathroom, obscured glass pocket doors open to a spacious walk-in closet, providing ample storage and organization without sacrificing style.
Blending Old and New Seamlessly
On the exterior, the transformation was just as impressive. The new two-car garage was finished with matching brick, classic Azek siding details, and statement light fixtures, blending seamlessly with the original home. Even the rooflines were carefully designed to complement the home’s existing hip roof, giving the addition a natural, cohesive look.
Inside the new garage, a ramp was built to ensure easy access into the hallway of the converted living space.
Repurposed cabinetry adds smart storage, making the garage both practical and stylish.
At the rear of the property, tiered landscaping and a walkway provide safe and beautiful access to the lower level of the home. Every element of the project was designed to combine function, safety, and aesthetic appeal.
Creating Spaces That Support Every Stage of Life
This garage conversion project demonstrates the power of thoughtful design in creating spaces that support aging in place while preserving the beauty and character of the home. By combining accessible design features with elegant finishes and personal touches, the homeowners now have a flexible, spacious suite that will serve them well for years to come.
