A Modern Farmhouse First-floor Renovation in Bucks County, PA

First floor renovation in Bucks County, PA

When Drew and Meghan decided to renovate their two-story colonial home in Buckingham, PA, they had one goal in mind: to create a space that was not only beautiful, but functional for their growing family. With a vision of a modern farmhouse kitchen and seamless flow between rooms, they partnered with Creative Contracting to bring their dream to life.

Expanding the Footprint for a Family-Focused Kitchen

The couple’s original galley kitchen was cramped and divided by an awkward wall, making it nearly impossible for more that one person to cook or gather comfortably. To solve this, we reimagined the entire layout by incorporating space from a previously underused screened-in porch. The result? A spacious, light-filled kitchen that now serves as the heart of the home.

At the center of the design id a grand, quartz-topped island—not just a focal point, but a hub for daily life. With room for five-person seating, it invites casual meals, after-school homework sessions, and lively entertaining. A built-in wine and beverage fridge, island storage, and stunning brass pendant lights combine convenience with elegance, echoing the home’s new modern farmhouse aesthetic.

Thoughtful Touches Make a House a Home

Before and after pic of a galley kitchen turned into a butler's pantry

To solve the issue of limited storage and poor traffic flow, we converted the former kitchen area—previously obstructed by a wall—into a butler’s pantry. This new feature provides ample room for stashing away kitchen essentials while keeping the main area tidy.

Butler's pantry and home office nook

Meghan had also dreamed of an efficient laundry and office nook, which we delivered with a smart layout that even includes a peek-through to the new full bathroom.

Antique brass pot filler

From the antique gold pot filler above the range to the clean white subway tile backsplash, every detail was designed with intention. Durable luxury vinyl flooring flows from the kitchen into the family room, giving the entire space a cohesive, updated look.

Renovated kitchen with white cabinets and custom banquette

Just outside the kitchen, a custom-built banquette creates a cozy spot for meals or schoolwork. Built-in storage beneath the seating makes it easy to stash supplies and keeps the space neat between uses.

Redesigning With Heart: A Tribute to Family

First floor renovation in Bucks County, PA

Connecting the kitchen to the family room was a crucial design move. To do this, we raised the family room to match the kitchen height, achieving a seamless transition between spaces.

Dark painted fireplace

One of the most touching elements of this renovation was the fireplace redesign, which served as a tribute to Meghan’s late father. He always wanted her and her family to have a functioning fireplace in their home. The family wanted to keep the original fireplace, which he loved, while giving it a more contemporary look and feel. We painted the brick and built-in bookcases in a rich charcoal gray, squared off the fireplace opening, and added a rustic rough-sawn wood mantel. Maintaining the original arches in the built-ins honored the home’s history while the redesign honored Meghan’s father.

A Full Bath and More Light for Everyday Living

Before and after of a half bath turned into a full bath

The addition of a full bathroom on the main floor serves multiple purposes: it’s accessible from the backyard for the couple’s active children, easily reached from the kitchen and positioned for use as a private bath when grandparents come to visit.

Triple wide patio doors

A new tripe-wide door and window combination brings in abundant natural light and creates a pathway to the outdoor deck and grill area—perfect for entertaining or family dinners on warm evenings.
